Memorial Day, it seems, has lost its significance. With the recent events in our history, it's been a mess of lacking patriotism and a wave of start-up activists saying "Fuck You!" to the government, and in all of that who cares about soldiers dying in a war nobody ever supported?

I'm not saying that I'm not one of said upstart wanna-be activists. I've done my share of writing letters to the White House and signing petitions, even if neither seemed to do anything at all. But there's a line here that many people seem to forget. Yes, soldiers are dying in the Middle East for a cause that we perhaps don't agree with. But who's to assume that those soldiers wanted to die for that cause themselves? People join the military for a myriad of reasons; forced into it by family tradition, as some I know were. There are those who felt they had no choice and knew that the government offers a half-decent education in exchange for service. There are those who had nowhere else to go. Or there are those who honestly believed in protecting a country full of people they loved, those who have faith in America and her people. Honestly, I would not be one of the latter had I ever joined the Military, but all in all I doubt that anyone joined the Armed Forces with the full intention of invading Iraq before the war started. And now, those who do have reasons. I myself, being a New Yorker, could easily understand the sentiments some hold that invading the Middle East is the only way to keep Americans safe, even if I highly disagree with said beliefs. But often those who don't support the war forget that soldiers are people. They are people who take orders from higher ups, and I am sure that not every soldier supports every single action taken by the military.

I don't claim to really know what I'm talking about, of course. I've never done service, although I know many who have. But I believe that every death should be a tragedy. War supporter or not, every life lost to violence deserves respect. People join the military to protect their country. That's us. U.S. And we should be at least a little grateful.

"I see you've found a box of my things -
Infantries, tanks and smoldering airplane wings."

"These old pictures are cool. Tell me some stories
Was it like the old war movies?"

"Sit down son. Let me fill you in.

Where to begin? Let's start with the end;
This black and white photo don't capture the skin.
From the flash of a gun to a soldier who's done;
Trust me grandson,
The war was in color."
